What software is available in the TRE?
Introduction
Windows and Ubuntu (Linux) Desktops are available in the TRE. Available software packages vary with each projects' requirements, and should be discussed during project initiation meetings with HIC. An importance consideration is the licensing implications if you are internal or external to the University of Dundee, e.g. Matlab is available for UoD researchers but not external TRE users.
We will consider requests for most open-source software packages as long as they have clear scriptable installation instructions. You can raise a ticket with our HICSupport@dundee.ac.uk team who will triage and pass to our Infrastructure team who can review individual requires. Any decision made by us will reflect our secure management standards adherence to the Five Saves Framework and our accreditation, i.e. requests will be scrutinized for sensitive data and risk management.
Available Software
Within our TRE, we have several “standard offerings” which require no additional infrastructure time to provision. If you require other software, some packages can be installed after you have created your workspace. You can install your own software using our secure access to restricted package repositories.
Examples of packages include:
VSCode
PyCHARM
JupyterLab/Notebook
R/RStudio
Python/Conda
Microsoft SQL Server
A minority of software cannot be installed as they are not designed to work in cloud based environments.
Researchers are strongly advised to discuss their requirements before starting a project.
